relevance of studying astronomy and what is the relevance of studying geology?

Are these two fields somehow interrelated? In yes in what way, if not what factors are operating to keep them islolated?

Answer:
Both deal with origins and processes. Geology is the study of the Earth; Astronomy is the study of the physical universe except the Earth. There is quite a bit of cross-over when you are studying planets, moons, and asteroids; for example, if you want to study the Lunar regolith ("soil"), you'd probably study geology and supplement it with a few astronomy courses.

Mastering one field is very difficult (e.g. studying the Earth's climate during the geologic past); mastering two (e.g. studying Martian ice caps) is incredibly difficult.

Academic disciplines (e.g. biology, geology, physics, astronomy) tend to be fairly proprietary about their turf. Funding for interdisciplinary projects is hard to win; also, jobs (good jobs) at the research level are fairly scarce, so someone with an unusual background (like a geology Ph.D. looking for a job in the Astronomy department) often has to jump some high hurdles to land a steady job.
