The most famous astronomers throughout history are Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, Isaac Newton and Halley.Ptolemy was most probably Greek; he was famous for writing several scientific dissertations. The most famous three ones made a big contribution to the Islamic and European science.
Copernicus was born in the end of the 15th century and he was the very first astronomer to make the statement that the Earth is not the center of the universe. His statements about the universe in the book “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres” has been referred to as the beginning for the Scientific Revolution. Galileo was born in the second half of the 16th century in Italy. His contribution to astronomy is very wide from advancing the telescope to being the first one to make a systematically study of the uniformly accelerated motion in space. His is often referred to as the “father of modern observational astronomy”.
Isaac Newton lived in the 17th century in England. He worked with the ideas of the Scientific Revolution and developed the three laws of motion and universal gravitation. Halley lived at about the same time as Newton and also in England. He was the leading astronomer of that time and he wrote papers about the solar systems, sunspots, monsoon and trade winds. It has been proven that Newton and Halley were in close contact and Halley even financed the publication of Newton’s book “Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy”.
